Malalai Popa

MursalMy name is Malalai. I am from Nuristan province, a mountainous isolated area. I joined an AFCECO orphanage in 2007 along with my two smaller sisters who are now both studying professional music. I finished my high school in 2015 and started working immediately at the orphanage.

Besides my work at the orphanage I am also a professional football player. I was one of the AFCECO students who were selected to play in Afghanistan's National Women's Football Team. I attend intensive training sessions and exercises three times a week. Of course, besides playing in the national team I also play in AFCECO’s own football team.

At present I work also with AFCECO's sponsor-child communication team, which supervises the communication between the children and their sponsors.

I once witnessed a woman die during childbirth in my home province because there were no midwives or even a doctor. That made me decide to study midwifery, a profession so desperately needed in my home province.

Malalai attends the Raazi Institute of Higher Education and is enrolled in a four year midwifery course.
